Two weeks ago my friend, Edna [05/24/06 Artists Swap Art], and I got together for the fourth time to paint on the same canvas. The first time, over a year ago, we worked on a canvas 40” x 30”. We were surprised the effort was so much fun and the result so interesting. We made another joint effort on gessoed Masonite, most of which were about 10” x 8”. We did eleven or twelve in about three hours. Last spring we worked on several polyester canvas strips about 12” to 18” wide and up to six feet long. Two weeks ago we produced thirteen of these little, irregularly shaped paintings in about four hours, with a leisurely lunch about midway.
There are no rules. Everything is allowed. We paint over, out, beside each other’s efforts until we agree on an ending point. If one of us wants to interrupt the other in mid brush stroke, that’s ok too. I like the small format. We have to contend with each other’s marks, color patches, splashes and blops. There are seven more of these images in the Album, Joint Painting with Edna. Next time we might try drawing. Or not.
