Edna & Chuck Get Serious ($5.35/sht, all rag paper)

Untitled Drawing, 29″ (70 cm) x 23″ (55 cm), black pastel on Strathmore 2ply all rag Bristol paper

Last Wednesday, November 14, Edna and I got together again for another bout of drawing. In the morning we included my two grandchildren, Megan 13, and Alex 8. After lunch the kids were doing something else. We thought the drawing was getting someplace interesting, so I brought out some good paper, Strathmore 2 ply Bristol. These are the last three drawings we did.

Joint Drawing with Edna

Joint Drawing with Edna, 24″ x 18″ (58cm x 43cm), charcoal & black pastel on paper

Yesterday, 10 November 2006, Edna Casman (http://www.casmanpaintings.com/) and I got together for the day in my studio to do some joint drawings. The same “rules” applied as a few weeks ago, 25 October 2006, when we did the last batch of small paintings. We worked for about four-and-a-half hours with a break for lunch. Edna brought lunch this time - lentil soup, home baked whole wheat bread, butter and fruit. There are five drawings shown here. The remaining eight are in the “Joint Work with Edna” album. I found drawing on the same sheet even more exciting than the painting. The process of responding to each other’s marks was very engaging. I love charcoal. It smears, smudges and erases in a very painterly way. The drawings aren’t shown in the order they were done. Next time I’ll make a note of the order.

Gamble Oak

Gambel Oak, Quercus gambelii 9 1/2″ tall

This is one of my favorite bonsai.  Gambel Oak is indigenous to this area.  I collected this specimen ten years ago in the Monzano Mountains.  It took several years of repotting to shorten the root enough to fit into a bonsai pot.  Oaks are not often made into bonsai, but this tree has small leaves to start with that can be made smaller in a pot. The heavily fissured bark makes the tree look very old
