Edna and I haven’t had time to draw much during the last month, only twice, November 13 and December 4.  These are the drawings from those two sessions.  We started the first drawing above early in November.  This was one that took some taming.  Every once in a while an animal appears.  This one wanted to be some kind of bird.  We’ll add it to the Bestiary Portfolio.  On the December 4th drawing day we decided to put in some darker areas and bolder color, but it just wouldn’t happen.  I guess the ballooning, filmy blobs are not through with us.

Last Monday, June 2, Edna and I got together at my studio for another round of joint drawing.  We are continuing with the colored drawings.  Last week we settled on about eight different pastel colors in addition to black and white.  We are continuing with these colors.

On May 8th, Edna and I took a break from painting and did three more drawings. Many laughs. The top drawing looks a bit like a bowler, the middle is another flower and the bottom drawing is either a deep sea microcosm or partying organelles in a cell.

New Drawings with Edna

After a holiday break, Edna and I got together last Wednesday, January 9th, for more drawing. Among the things we did was to finish a series six drawings, which, for lack of a better term, I’ll call the Big Bend series.

Last Tuesday, December 5, Edna and I got together again in my studio to do some more drawing. We spent the morning developing some images from parts of that day’s work and last Tuesday’s work. In the afternoon we worked on four finished drawings on Strathmore 2 ply rag Bristol. The material we’re working with is black pastel, kneaded eraser, soap eraser and plastic eraser. Each eraser has its own character. The subject here is the black pastel and the kind of marks it makes and our response to each others marks. The Strathmore Bristol has a vellum (slightly textured) surface that accepts the pastel well and takes repeated erasures without scuffing up. Our way of sharing the work is sort of musical. One of us makes a mark(s), the opening theme, the other embellishes the preceeding mark or answers with another mark. Sometimes it’s a duet. In this way the drawing’s composition evolves. Sometimes an earlier passage needs subduing (erasing) or strengthening. The drawing’s melody tells us when we’re done. This is a lot like the tango: each of us has to trust the other in leading and following to make one dance.

We quit a little early and stopped at a neaby community college where all the buildings are fairly new and the walls mostly bare. We made some enquiries about hanging work. Folks we talked to hadn’t even thought about it, but were interested. Virgin walls!

Joint Drawing with Edna

Joint Drawing with Edna, 24″ x 18″ (58cm x 43cm), charcoal & black pastel on paper

Yesterday, 10 November 2006, Edna Casman (http://www.casmanpaintings.com/) and I got together for the day in my studio to do some joint drawings. The same “rules” applied as a few weeks ago, 25 October 2006, when we did the last batch of small paintings. We worked for about four-and-a-half hours with a break for lunch. Edna brought lunch this time - lentil soup, home baked whole wheat bread, butter and fruit. There are five drawings shown here. The remaining eight are in the “Joint Work with Edna” album. I found drawing on the same sheet even more exciting than the painting. The process of responding to each other’s marks was very engaging. I love charcoal. It smears, smudges and erases in a very painterly way. The drawings aren’t shown in the order they were done. Next time I’ll make a note of the order.
