EDNA Casman and I did the ten drawings above over our last three sessions, September 3, 8 and 15.  The first three represent more efforts to have the focus of the drawing toward a side edge.  The first two have a composition that amounts to a triangle pointing into the picture.  This gives the feeling that the empty space is about to be occupied.  The third is a little different.  Here the figure appears to be walking into or being pushed into the empty space.  The last drawing is an interesting attempt to salvage an unsatisfactory drawing by mostly covering it up.  The lower right triangle and the oval were part to the original drawing.  Here, we conducted the search for the drawing by erasing it with color, very low chroma colors, but color still.  By controlling the amount of color pastel in the coloring-out layer or erasing into the coloring-out layer, or fixing some of the underlying passages, we arrived at this solution.  In nearly all our previous drawings, except for the silver drawings, we have been content to leave the white of the paper as background.  In this drawing the uncovered paper could be read as foreground to the action in the drawing.  The uncovered paper could also be background to the drawing, which descends from above like a curtain, although we left the upper right uncovered to make that interpretation less certain.  We are very fond of uncertain interpretations.

Edna and I haven’t had time to draw much during the last month, only twice, November 13 and December 4.  These are the drawings from those two sessions.  We started the first drawing above early in November.  This was one that took some taming.  Every once in a while an animal appears.  This one wanted to be some kind of bird.  We’ll add it to the Bestiary Portfolio.  On the December 4th drawing day we decided to put in some darker areas and bolder color, but it just wouldn’t happen.  I guess the ballooning, filmy blobs are not through with us.

BLOG DOT COM COMMUNITY

I don’t know how your blog is working.  Mine is not working, and I’m paying for it. To get images properly formatted I must upload them directly from my computer.  If I load them to an album and then insert them in a blog entry, the heavily cropped square image is all that I get.  The image is not restored to its full size, as it was in the past two plus years.  Also, newly uploaded images are spread willy nilly throughout the album, which is a problem if the album has two hundred images.  I pay to have my blog images stored, but now, not one stored image is usable.  Furthermore, the text formatting is awkward and I am unable to leave comments at other blogs on this network.  Two e-mails to the management have gone unanswered.

Meanwhile, back in the studio

Detail of Previous Image

Edna and I have missed a few drawing session in the last two months, but we have been busy creating early 21st Century master drawings nevertheless.  The foregoing are August and September’s latest work.

Drawing with Edna

For those who may have just arrived, Edna and I have been working on the same image at the same time.  Two years ago, just for fun, we worked on the same 40″ x 30″ (102cm x 76cm) canvas for a few hours.  The results were interesting at best, but we had fun.  A few more painting experiments followed, some of which can be seen here.  Search under Edna.  Last autumn we decided to try some joint drawing.  We like the results and decided to use some good paper.  We worked almost weekly for about six months.  We showed the results to an Albuquerque art dealer with whom we have both worked.  She liked the drawings very much.  We will exhibit sixteen of the drawings this May at Art Is…OK Gallery.

Last Thursday, April 12th, Edna and I got together for another day of drawing. We followed our usual routine: talking about/evaluating previous results 9:30-10:00; drawing 10:00-12:30; lunch 12:30-1:00; serious drawing 1:00-3:30.  Times may vary a little bit, but about four hours working.  Sincd the upcoming exhibit marks a break of sorts in the images we have been developing, we felt that we would look for something new to work with.  The five images below are the afternoon’s work.
