In July Edna Casman and I met to draw the 2nd in my studio and the 30th in her studio.  August 6th we met again in her studio.  The drawings above are from these sessions.  They do not appear in the order we did them.  I’ve forgotten what order they appeared.  As we draw and the drawing reveals itself to us line by smear, we often attach an amusing situation or story, which, in turn, suggests additions to the drawing.  The drawing just above began in a warm-up effort in the morning as a lazy moon lying at the bottom of the sheet of paper.  A few more lines made it a boat.   In the afternoon, on the “good” paper (which, by the way, has risen in price by more than a dollar a sheet the last several months)  a dragon menaces the boat, now occupied by two figures, one of whom shows a distressing nonchalance, considering the nearness and size of the writhing threat.  This all happens under a rainy, cloud covered sky.

Las Cruces Invitation

Edna and I are exhibiting about 20 of our jointly made flower themed drawings at the Las Cruces Museum February 6 - April 4, 2009.  The reception for the artists is Friday, February 6, 5-7 pm.  We are both “dressing” for the reception.  Edna will be wearing a stunning bold flower patterned ensemble and I’ve made a flower bauble to wear on my black long sleeved T-shirt.  Be sure not to miss this gala affair, which kicks off Las Cruces’ “For the Love of Art Month.”

Flower Bauble, 2.5″ x 2.5″ x 2.5″ (6.4cm x 6.4cm x 6.4 cm), aluminum, galvanized wire, safety pin

The first two drawings above are from the January 15th drawing session.  The next three drawings are from January 29th.  These three drawings are a variation on a theme from the morning.

On January 27th Edna and I spent the day putting the drawings and frames together for the exhibit at Las Cruces Museum.

Last Thursday Edna and I got together to draw at her studio. We’re continuing to add color. I’ve added a detail of one of the drawings. The details - smears, falling grains of pastel, incomplete erasures, lightness or heaviness of touch, paper texture - that give immediacy to the drawn image get lost in the translation from drawing to internet image.

Last Monday, June 2, Edna and I got together at my studio for another round of joint drawing.  We are continuing with the colored drawings.  Last week we settled on about eight different pastel colors in addition to black and white.  We are continuing with these colors.

Edna and I got together last Thursday for another bout of drawing.  I think it’s been a month since we last spent a day drawing.  Life and death stuff keeps getting in the way.  We’re adding these to our Flower Portfolio for our exhibit at the Los Cruces Museum a eleven months from now.  Several attempts to find other venues (museums, galleries) have not been successful.

Last Tuesday, January 22, Edna and I got together at her studio for another day of drawing. We finished three more flower drawings we had started in the previous session (the first three above), and two more of the big bend drawings. The last drawing may start a beastiary series, although the one above that may be a beast and and not a big bend.

Today we worked on our first painting based on the drawings. The painting is 54″ x 50″ (137cm x 127cm), big enough for us to work at the same time. We stapled the canvas to my studio wall.  Edna and Cathy, my wife, like it a lot, but I’m not sure what to make of it. I feel I’m in very unfamiliar territory.  Turning a drawing into a painting is not making a drawing in color.

Drawing with Edna

Untitled Drawing, 29″ x 23″ (74cm x 58cm), charcoal, black pastel on toned Strathmore rag 2 ply Bristol

Edna and I got together last Friday afternoon, October 26, to draw some more. Cathy, my wife, particularly liked the top drawing. We’re still working on the toned ground. Edna and I only worked in the afternoon last Friday. I had spent the morning drawing from the model. Interestingly enough, I found that the two and half hours I drew from the model in no way helped me or “warmed me up” for the afternoon. This is the first time we did not spend the morning playing around with drawing. I understand now that this is the time we work out the images that appear in the afternoon. Each of us has a dozen or so old “morning” drawings tacked to our studio walls, but these drawings are “cold.” In the morning following our usual routine, we may take some of the “cold” images and “warm” them up or work up some new imagery for the afternoon, when we work to get the finished drawings. Those warmed up images were missing Friday afternoon. That made the drawing more difficult.
